About Us

NIRM is exclusively devoted to basic and applied research in rock mechanics. Over the period of the last 38 years, the institute has had the privilege of providing its expertise to various central and state government agencies and public sector undertakings in the fields of mining, hydroelectric projects, nuclear power projects, the oil and gas sector, and infrastructure projects including railways, roads, airports, hospitals and others.

The Institute has been developed as a Centre of Excellence for Rock Engineering, with the following broad areas of activities:

  • Engineering geological investigations, mapping and analysis.
  • Seismotectonic and geomorphological studies.
  • Engineering geophysical investigations at surface and underground.
  • In-situ stress, deformability, permeability and shear strength parameters.
  • Testing of rock mass for physico-mechanical properties.
  • Rock excavation through blast design, blasting optimisation and controlled blasting.
  • Monitoring and mitigation of ground vibration, air overpressure and fly rock.
  • Rock mass damage control and near-field vibration monitoring.
  • Design of excavation methods, extraction sequencing and backfilling.
  • Mine stability analysis, support design, stress analysis and numerical modelling.
  • Mine instrumentation, monitoring, mining-induced seismicity and seismic hazard assessment using seismic and microseismic monitoring.

NIRM has established a strong reputation in industry through its specialised services in rock mechanics and rock engineering. With state-of-the-art equipment and a committed team of experienced scientists, the Institute effectively combines research, testing, field investigations and consultancy to provide tailor-made solutions for complex engineering and geotechnical challenges.

NIRM's activities are structured across nine specialised areas, each supported by dedicated domain experts. Its enduring strength lies in its commitment to "Excellence through Innovation."
