Dr. Balasubramaniam VR

Scientist-V & Head of Department

Dr.Balasubramaniam is a geophysicist, with a M.Sc. (Tech) degree in 1995 from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam and Ph.D. in 2013 from IIT Bombay, Mumbai. He has been serving as Scientist at NIRM since March 1996, and has contributed to over 80 industry sponsored project and three research projects.

His area of specialisation is Near Surface Engineering Geophysical Investigations and Engineering Seismological investigations. His significant research works include SFGPR application in underground mines and assessment of seismic hazard in old mining areas. He was part the international collaboration research programme with Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), Norway for development and application of Step Frequency GPR (SFGPR) in India during 1996-2000.

He is currently Scientist-V and Head of the Engineering Seismology Dept. at NIRM and specialises on microseismic monitoring of underground mines, tunnels etc, their safety and stability, seismological studies and seismic hazard for major and critical infrastructure projects.

He coordinated and conducted Ministry of Mines sponsored training programme for mining industry executives on importance of microseismic monitoring in underground mines in 2022. He has authored/co-authored 7 peer-reviewed international publications (IEEE, EAGE, Springer and Elsevier) and 21 publications in national and international conferences. He is member of the professional bodies - ISRM, ISEG, IGS, AEG, IGU and ISET.

Scientist-III

Dr Divyalakshmi She holds M.Sc degree in Geology(2006) , M.Phil in Geology (2007) and P.hD in Geology (2015) from University of Madras. Dr. Divyalakshmi was Junior Research Fellow in University of Madras. She completed her PhD in Tsunami Threat Assessment by Numerical Modelling and GIS. Working as Scientists at NIRM since 2008, she specialised in application of Remote Sensing & GIS for the geological investigations, with focus on active fault studies for critical civil structures. She is currently working in the area of microseismic monitoring and seismological studies.

She has published 11 papers/abstracts in journals and conferences. She presented papers in international (China) and national conferences on remote sensing applications. She was Jt. coordinator of the Ministry of Mines sponsored training programme for mining industry executives on importance of microseismic monitoring in underground mines in 2022. Presently, her research interests are surface seismological studies and seismic hazard for major and critical infrastructure projects.
