Engineering Geological Investigations
Engineering geological inputs are pre-requisite for economic and safe designing of construction projects related to power sector (hydel, thermal, nuclear), lift irrigation sector, communication sector (metros, rails, tunnels, roads, bridges), mining sector, and also for geohazard assessment and mitigation. The department is having the expertise to undertake works related to engineering geological investigations in various stages of the project developments, i.e., feasibility report (FR), detailed project report (DPR), construction and post construction stages.
During the last five years DPR stage engineering geological investigations were carried out for Bunakha hydroelectric power project (180 MW), Bhutan and Pranahitha - Chevella Sujala Sravanthi lift irrigation project Packages – 6, 8, 10 and 12, Telangana State. Feasibility stage investigations were carried out for Pranahitha - Chevella Sujala Sravanthi lift irrigation project Packages – 5 & 8. Reservoir rim area of Bunakha HEP was investigated in detailed regarding reservoir rim stability and reservoir competency.
Construction stage engineering geological investigations were carried out for unlined underground rock caverns constructed at Visakhapatnam (capacity 1.33 MMT), Mangalore (1.50 MMT) and Padur (2.5 MMT), for Mahatma Gandhi Kalwakurthi lift irrigation Scheme-II and Scheme-III at Mahaboobnagar District of Telangana State, for twin tunnels on the Hungund – Hospet Section of NH-13, near Hospet, Karnataka, and for Pulichintala hydroelectric project (120 MW).
Construction stage engineering geological investigations of Rajasthan Atomic Power Project Units 7 & 8 (2 x 700 MW) are being carried out since December 2010. The main aims of the engineering geological investigations are: characterization of rock mass, recommendation of support design and modification of design as per actual site conditions.
